Ancient Egyptian Archeology
- Ancient Egyptian archaeology is the study of the archaeology of Egypt, spanning from prehistory through three millennia of documented history.
Branches of Egyptology
- Egyptian archeology is one of the branches of Egyptology, alongside Art, Literature, Religion, and History.
William Matthew Flinders Petrie
- William Matthew Flinders Petrie, known as the "father of Egyptian archeology", introduced the archaeological techniques of field preservation, recording, and excavation methodology in the mid-1880s.
The Rosetta Stone
- The Rosetta Stone was discovered in 1799 by French officer Bouchard during the Napoleonic campaign in Egypt.
- It was the first Ancient Egyptian bilingual text recovered in modern times, and it aroused widespread public interest.
Deir El Bersha
Location
- Deir El Bersha is located 225 km south of Cairo, on the east bank of the Nile to the south of Antinoöpolis (Sheik Abāda) and almost opposite to the city of Mallawi.
Pharaonic Period
- During the pharaonic period, there was a vast cemetery at Deir El Bersha, which is most well known for its decorated Middle Kingdom tombs.
- It was the cemetery of the governors (Nomarchs) of the Hare Nome, the 15th Upper Egyptian Nome.
Famous Tombs
- The tomb of the nomarch, Djehutihotep, is one of the most famous rock-cut tombs at Deir El Bersha.
Destruction and Looting
- Several of the tombs were destroyed by ancient quarrying and looting, including some for construction at Amarna.
- It also continued to be used as a cemetery until the end of the Second Intermediate Period and the early New Kingdom.
The Book of Two Ways
- In 2019, archaeologists announced that the oldest copy of The Book of Two Ways had been found on the Coffin of Ankh, an early Middle Kingdom coffin of a woman.
- The fragment includes Coffin Text spells 1128 and 1130, two spells that are found in the later examples of The Book of Two Ways.
