Study Notes
Ventral Body Cavity
- Divided into two divisions by the diaphragm: Thoracic Cavity and Abdominopelvic Cavity
Thoracic Cavity
- Divided into three cavities: Pleural Cavity, Mediastinum, and Pericardial Cavity
Pleural Cavities
- Also known as pleural space
- Lined with a serous membrane called the pleura
- Consists of parietal and visceral parts
- Parietal pleura lines the walls of the thorax, diaphragm, and mediastinum
- Visceral pleura covers the surface of the lung
- Pleural cavity between parietal and visceral pleurae is filled with pleural fluid
- Functions of pleural fluid:
- Acts as a lubricant between visceral and parietal pleurae during respiration
- Helps hold pleural membranes together
Mediastinum Cavity
- A space in the thoracic cavity between left and right pleural cavities
- Contains many structures, including:
- Organs
- Blood vessels
