    Study Notes

    Anatomy of the Mandible

    • The mandible is the lower jawbone.
    • It supports the lower teeth.
    • It is a complex structure with many features.

    Supporting Structures

    • Fibrous connective tissue covers the alveolar ridge and is thin and not firmly attached, especially in the lower ridge.
    • External oblique ridge extends upwards and backwards from the mental foramen along the anterior border of the ramus.
    • Buccal shelf of bone is an area bounded medially by the residual ridge, laterally by the external oblique ridge, mesially by the buccal frenulum, and distally by the masseter muscle.
    • Mental foramen is located on the external surface of the body of the mandible between the roots of the premolars. It transmits the mental nerve and vessels.
    • Mylohyoid ridge (internal oblique ridge) extends downward and forward from the third molar area on the inner surface of the body of the mandible. It provides attachment for the mylohyoid muscle.
    • Torus mandibularis is a bony prominence on the lingual aspect of the mandible.
    • Genial tubercles are located on the inner surface of the mandible in the symphysis region. They are normally not palpable.
    • Retromolar pad is a pear-shaped area of mucous membrane at the posterior end of the lower ridge, anterior to the pterygomandibular raphe. It contains mucous glands, the temporalis tendon, and fibers of the buccinator and superior constrictor muscles.
    • Tongue is located in the floor of the mouth and plays an important role in deglutition and speech.

Limiting Structures of the Lower Denture

    • Frena are folds of mucous membrane that attach the lips and cheeks to the gingiva.
    • Vestibules are the spaces between the teeth and the cheeks and lips.
    • Buccal frenum is a fold of mucous membrane in the premolar area.
    • Buccal vestibule is the space between the teeth and the cheek.
    • Masseter muscle influencing area is the distobuccal corner of the lower denture. The buccal flange must converge medially to avoid displacement of the denture upon contraction of this muscle.
    • Distolingual area is the area behind the last molar.
    • Lingual pouch is a space between the tongue and the mandible.
    • Sublingual gland area is the area where the sublingual gland is located. With excessive resorption of the mandible, the gland may bulge superiorly above the body of the mandible.
