Study Notes

The Eyeball Structure

  • The adult eyeball measures approximately 2.5cm in diameter.
  • The eyeball is divided into three main parts: outer fibrous, middle vascular, and inner nervous layers.

Outer Fibrous Layer

  • Comprises the sclera and cornea.
  • The sclera is the white, outer coat of the eyeball, covering the posterior and lateral aspects.
  • The cornea is a transparent, convex structure that bends light rays to focus them on the retina.
  • The sclera maintains the shape of the eye and provides attachment to the extra-ocular muscles.

Middle Vascular Layer

  • Consists of the choroid, ciliary body, and iris.
  • The choroid lies posteriorly on the inner surface of the sclera.
  • The choroid contains blood vessels.

Inner Nervous Layer

  • Comprises the retina.

Other Structures Inside the Eyeball

  • The lens is a structure inside the eyeball.
  • The aqueous fluid and vitreous body are also found within the eyeball.
