    Study Notes

    Deep Peroneal Nerve

    • Divides into 2 terminal branches
    • Cutaneous branches supply skin of the cleft between the 1st and 2nd toes
    • Muscular branches supply all 4 muscles of the anterior compartment of the leg
    • Articular branches supply the ankle joint

    Tibial Nerve

    • Continuation of the tibial (medial) popliteal nerve
    • Descends between superficial and deep flexors of the back of the leg
    • Divides deep to the flexor retinaculum into a medial and lateral plantar nerve

    Medial Plantar Nerve

    • Larger of the two terminal branches of the tibial nerve
    • Muscular branches supply:
      • Abductor hallucis
      • Flexor digitorum brevis
    • Cutaneous branches supply:
      • Skin of the medial 2/3 of the sole
      • Skin of the plantar surface of the medial 3 ½ toes

    Lateral Plantar Nerve

    • Smaller of the two terminal branches of the tibial nerve
    • Muscular branches supply:
      • Abductor digit minimi
      • Flexor digitorum accessorius
      • All 7 interosseus muscles
    • Cutaneous branches supply:
      • Skin of the lateral part of the sole
      • Skin of the plantar surface of the lateral 1 ½ toes
