    Study Notes

    Subclavian Artery

    • Origin: right side - branch of brachiocephalic artery; left side - branch of arch of aorta in the superior mediastinum
    • Course: C-shaped course in root of neck, arches from behind sternoclavicular joint to outer border of 1st rib
    • Ending: at outer border of first rib, where it continues as axillary artery

    Parts of Subclavian Artery

    • Divided into 3 parts by the scalenus anterior muscle:
      • 1st part: medial to the muscle
      • 2nd part: behind the muscle
      • 3rd part: lateral to the muscle

    Branches of Subclavian Artery

    • From 1st part:
      • Vertebral artery
      • Thyrocervical trunk
      • Internal thoracic artery
    • From 2nd part:
      • Costocervical trunk
    • From 3rd part:
      • Usually gives descending scapular artery, which replaces deep branch of transverse cervical artery

Main Arterial Supply of The Thorax

    • Descending thoracic aorta
    • Subclavian artery
    • Internal thoracic artery

    Aorta

    • Parts of aorta (ascending, arch, and descending aorta) are present in mediastinum
    • Descending thoracic aorta ends at level of T12, passing through aortic opening of the diaphragm to become abdominal aorta

    Parts of Aorta

    • Ascending aorta: in middle mediastinum, gives 2 coronary arteries
    • Arch of aorta: in superior mediastinum, gives:
      • Brachiocephalic artery
      • Left common carotid artery
      • Left subclavian artery
    • Descending thoracic aorta: in posterior mediastinum, ends at level of T12
    • Abdominal aorta: in abdomen, ends as right and left common iliac arteries

    Descending Thoracic Aorta

    • Position: posterior mediastinum
    • Beginning: continuation of arch of aorta at lower border of 4th thoracic vertebra
    • Course: descends in front of anterior longitudinal ligament of vertebral column

    Vertebral Arteries

    • Origin: from 1st part of subclavian arteries
    • Course: ascend via transverse foramina of cervical vertebrae from C6 –C1, enter skull via foramen magnum
    • Ending: unite to form basilar artery, which lies on anterior surface of pons
    • Supplies cervical vertebrae, cerebellum, and spinal cord with blood

    Costocervical Trunk

    • Short arterial trunk that passes backwards above cervical pleura to neck of 1st rib
    • Divides into 2 terminal branches:
      • Deep cervical artery
      • Superior intercostal artery

    Internal Thoracic Artery

    • Origin: arises from 1st part of subclavian artery behind sternal end of clavicle
    • Branches:
      • Musculophrenic artery
      • Superior epigastric artery
