Study Notes
Peripheral Nervous System
- The Somatic system is responsible for transmitting sensory information from the body to the CNS and motor signals from the CNS to the muscles and glands.
- The Autonomous system, also known as the Autonomic nervous system, regulates involuntary functions such as heart rate, digestion, and breathing.
Central Nervous System
- Gray matter is located in the outer layer of the brain and spinal cord, and contains the majority of the CNS's neurons.
- White matter gets its white color from the myelin sheath, a fatty substance that surrounds and insulates the axons of neurons.
Spinal Cord
- The gray matter in the spinal cord is located in the inner portion, surrounded by white matter.
- The bodies of motor neurons are located in the gray matter of the spinal cord.
Cerebellum
- The Purkinje cell layer contains a row of large interneurons called Purkinje cells, which are the smallest neurons in the body.
Reflex Arc
- A reflex arc in the spinal cord is responsible for automatic responses to stimuli, bypassing the brain.
Meninges
- The pia mater layer surrounds the cerebrospinal fluid and blood vessels in the meninges.
Autonomous Nervous System
- The neurons of the autonomous nervous system originate in the brain stem and spinal cord.
- The sympathetic nervous system, a part of the autonomous nervous system, is responsible for the "fight or flight" response in situations of stress, increasing heart rate and blood pressure.
- The parasympathetic nervous system, another part of the autonomous nervous system, promotes relaxation and reduces stress, slowing heart rate and promoting digestion.
Sensitive Ganglia
- Sensitive ganglia are characterized by the presence of nerve cell bodies outside the CNS.
Cerebrum
- The majority of interneurons form communication networks for integration of sensory and motor neurons in the cerebrum.
