Study Notes
Meninges and Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)
- Meninges consist of three layers: dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater.
- Meninges are continuous with those of the spinal cord (SC).
- Cerebrospinal fluid surrounds the brain in the subarachnoid space.
Divisions of the Brain
-
Hindbrain/Brain Stem
- Comprises the medulla oblongata, pons, and cerebellum.
- Medulla oblongata connects the pons superiorly and the SC inferiorly.
-
Midbrain
- Positioned above the hindbrain.
-
Forebrain
- Contains the diencephalon (between brain) and cerebrum.
Medulla Oblongata
- Also known as myelencephalon, it is the most caudal segment of the brainstem.
- Has a conical shape and contains collections of neurons known as nuclei.
Cerebellum
- Located in the posterior cranial fossa, posterior to the pons and medulla.
- Comprises two hemispheres connected by the vermis.
The Cerebrum
- The largest part of the brain, consisting of two hemispheres.
- Hemispheres connected by white matter called the corpus callosum.
- Separated by the longitudinal fissure, into which the falx cerebri projects.
- Boundaries extend from frontal to occipital bones, above the anterior and middle cranial fossae.
Nucleus Dorsalis (Clark’s Column)
- Found at the base of the posterior gray column in spinal segments C8-L3 or L4.
- Contains large neurons associated with proprioceptive endings (neuromuscular and tendon spindles).
Visceral Afferent Nucleus
- Located in spinal segments T1-L3, with medium-sized nerve cells.
- Responsible for receiving visceral afferent information.
Nerve Cell Groups in the Lateral Gray Columns
-
Intermediolateral Group
- Present in T1-L2 or L3 segments, gives rise to pre-ganglionic sympathetic fibers.
- A similar group is found in S2 to S4 segments.
Central Canal
- Present throughout the spinal cord, filled with CSF.
- Lined with ciliated columnar epithelium (ependymal cells).
- Closed inferiorly and opens superiorly into the fourth ventricle.
White Matter
- Composed of nerve fibers, neuroglia, and blood vessels.
- Surrounds the gray matter and appears white due to myelin.
- Divided into anterior, lateral, and posterior white columns.
Corticospinal Tract (CST)
- Fibers arise from pyramidal cells in the cerebral cortex.
- Comprised of axons from precentral gyrus (2/3) and postcentral gyrus (1/3).
- Myelinated fibers, relatively slow conducting.
Additional Key Points
- Cerebellar connections include the superior cerebellar peduncle (Brachium conjunctivum) connecting the cerebellum to the midbrain.
- Each spinal cord level contains gray matter proportional to the muscle innervated.
- The filum terminale is an extension of the pia mater at the apex of the conus medullaris.
