Anatomical Planes
- The horizontal (transverse) plane divides the body into upper and lower parts.
Anatomical Terms in Movement
- Adduction of the hip squeezes the legs together, moving towards the midline.
- Medial rotation is a rotational movement towards the midline.
- Lateral rotation is a rotating movement away from the midline.
- Circumduction is the combination of flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, and medial and lateral rotation movements (e.g., in the shoulder joint).
Membranes of the Anterior (Ventral) Body Cavity
- There are three serous cavities and their associated membranes:
- Pleura: a serous membrane surrounding the lungs in the pleural cavity.
- Pericardium: a serous membrane surrounding the heart in the pericardial cavity.
- Peritoneum: a serous membrane surrounding several organs in the abdominopelvic cavity.
