Directional Terms
- Distal refers to the direction away from the point of attachment
- Proximal is the opposite of distal
- Medial means toward or nearer the midline
- Lateral means away from the midline
- Bilateral means relating to or having two sides
Body Planes
- Vertical planes divide the body into anterior and posterior parts
- Frontal plane (also called coronal plane) divides the body into anterior and posterior parts
- Sagittal plane passes from front to back and divides the body into unequal right and left portions
- Midsagittal plane divides the body into equal left and right halves
Abdominal Regions
- The abdomen can be divided into four sections by a single vertical and a single horizontal line intersecting at the umbilicus
- The four sections are: right upper quadrant (RUQ), left upper quadrant (LUQ), right lower quadrant (RLQ), and left lower quadrant (LLQ)
