Study Notes

Bones and Bone Markings

  • Maxilla: Upper jawbone, forms part of the orbits and contains the maxillary sinuses.
  • Coronal Suture: Junction between the frontal and parietal bones, runs from ear to ear across the skull.
  • External Acoustic Meatus: Canal in the temporal bone leading to the eardrum, plays a role in hearing.
  • Frontal Bone: Forehead bone, forms the anterior part of the cranium and houses the frontal sinuses.
  • Lambdoid Suture: Connects the occipital bone to the parietal bones, shaped like an inverted "V".
  • Mandible: The lower jawbone, largest and strongest facial bone, supports lower teeth.
  • Mandibular Condyle: Rounded end of the mandible, articulates with the temporal bone at the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
  • Mandibular Notch: U-shaped space between the condyle and coronoid process of the mandible.
  • Mandibular Ramus: Vertical extension of the mandible, forms the posterior part of the jawbone.
  • Mental Foramen: Opening in the mandible, allows for the passage of nerves and blood vessels.
  • Nasal Bone: Two small bones forming the bridge of the nose, contributes to the shape of the nasal cavity.
  • Occipital Bone: Bone at the back and base of the skull, contains the foramen magnum for the spinal cord.
  • Parietal Bone: Two bones forming the sides and roof of the skull, contributes to cranial cavity protection.
  • Sphenoid Bone: Central bone of the skull, resembles a butterfly, articulates with all cranial bones.
  • Styloid Process: Long, pointed projection of the temporal bone, serves as an attachment for muscles and ligaments.
  • Temporal Bone: Forms the sides and base of the skull, houses structures of the ear.
  • Zygomatic Bone: Cheekbone, forms the lateral wall of the orbits and part of the zygomatic arch.
  • Zygomatic Process: Projection of the temporal bone that articulates with the zygomatic bone.
  • Squamous Suture: Joint between the temporal bone and parietal bone, located on the lateral side of the skull.
  • Foramen Magnum: Large opening in the occipital bone through which the spinal cord passes.
  • Mandibular Fossa: Concave area in the temporal bone where the mandible articulates, part of the TMJ.
  • Occipital Condyle: Rounded projections next to the foramen magnum, articulate with the atlas (C1).
  • Palatine Bone: L-shaped bone forming part of the hard palate and floor of the nasal cavity.
  • Vomer: Plow-shaped bone forming the inferior part of the nasal septum.
  • Atlas (C1): First cervical vertebra, supports the skull, allows nodding motion.
  • Axis (C2): Second cervical vertebra, contains the odontoid process (dens), allows for rotational movement.
  • Coccyx: Tailbone, terminal part of the vertebral column, provides attachment for ligaments.
  • Dens: Protruding structure on the axis, allows for rotation of the head.
  • Hyoid: U-shaped bone in the neck, supports the tongue and aids in swallowing.
  • Inferior Articular Process: Projections on vertebrae that form joints with adjacent vertebrae.
  • Lamina: Thin layer of bone, part of a vertebra, that connects the processes.
  • Manubrium: Superior part of the sternum, articulates with the clavicles and first rib.
  • Neck: Section of a rib connecting the head to the body.
  • Pedicle: Projections on a vertebra that connect the body to the processes.
  • Sacrum: Triangular bone at the base of the vertebral column, formed by fusion of sacral vertebrae.
  • Spinous Process: Bony projection on the back of a vertebra, provides attachment for muscles and ligaments.
  • Superior Articular Process: Projections that form joints with the vertebrae above.
  • Transverse Process: Lateral projections of a vertebra, serve as levers for muscle attachment.
  • Vertebral Foramen: Opening in vertebrae through which the spinal cord passes.
  • Xiphoid Process: Small, cartilaginous extension at the lower end of the sternum.
