The Cardiovascular System
- A closed system consisting of the heart and blood vessels
- Functions to bring oxygen, nutrients, and vital substances to cells and remove metabolic waste products
Components of the Cardiovascular System
- Heart: pumps blood throughout the body
- Blood vessels: allow blood to circulate to all parts of the body
- Arteries (الشرايين): vessels that carry blood away from the heart
- Veins (الأوردة): vessels that return blood to the heart
Structure of the Heart
- Consists of two independent pumps, each made of two chambers:
- Atrium (الأذين): upper chamber
- Ventricle (البطين): lower chamber
- Entrances and exits are controlled by valves that maintain blood flow in the proper direction
Blood Circulation
- Blood is pumped from the heart through arteries to all parts of the body
- Returns to the heart through veins
