Temporal Bone Anatomy

The os temporale, or temporal bone, is a complex bone located on the sides and base of the cranium. It consists of four parts: squamous, petrous, mastoid, and tympanic.

Petrous Part

• Forms the base of the temporal bone
• Densely compact and hard
• Houses the inner ear structures:
  • Cochlea
  • Vestibule
  • Semicircular canals
  • Auditory nerve
• Contains the internal acoustic meatus, which transmits the facial and vestibulocochlear nerves

Mastoid Part

• Located behind the external acoustic meatus
• Composed of air-filled cavities (mastoid air cells) that connect to the middle ear
• Functions in the drainage and aeration of the middle ear
• Contains the mastoid process, a bony prominence that serves as an attachment site for muscles

Squamous Part

• Forms the flat, upper part of the temporal bone
• Thin and flat
• Articulates with the parietal bone to form the temporoparietal suture
• Contains the squamous suture, which separates it from the mastoid part

Tympanic Part

• Forms the anterior wall of the external acoustic meatus
• Thin and curved
• Articulates with the squamous part to form the tympanosquamous suture
• Contains the tympanic membrane, which separates the outer ear from the middle ear
