Study Notes
Anatomical Position
- In the anatomical position the body is assumed to be standing.
- Anatomical position includes the head and eyes directed anteriorly (forward).
- Upper limbs by the sides with palms facing anteriorly.
- Lower limbs close together with feet parallel and toes directed anteriorly.
- Standing upright.
- Head and eyes directed straight ahead.
- Upper limbs at the sides.
- Upper limbs slightly away from trunk.
- Palms facing forward.
- Thumbs pointing away from body.
- Lower limbs parallel.
- Feet flat on the ground and facing forward.
Anatomical Terms
- Anterior (frontal) is towards the front.
- Posterior (dorsal) is towards the back.
- Superior is towards the head.
- Inferior is towards the feet
- Proximal means closer to the root, for example the elbow is proximal to the wrist on the upper extremity.
- Distal means away from the root, for example the elbow is distal to the shoulder joint on the upper extremity.
- Median is a point or area on the midsagittal plane (median plane).
- Medial is a point or area that is closer to the midsagittal plane than another.
- Lateral is a point or area that is more distant from the mid-sagittal or median plane, for example the outer side of the elbow is lateral when compared with the inner side.
Planes of the Body
- Median plane
- Sagittal plane
- Coronal plane
- Transverse plane
