Study Notes
Anatomical Position
- It involves standing upright
- Head and eyes face directly ahead
- Upper limbs are at the sides
- Limb separation slightly away from trunk
- Palms face forward
- Thumbs point away from the body
- Lower limbs stay parallel
- Feet remain flat on the ground and face forward
Anatomical position assumptions
- The body stands
- Head, eyes, and toes face anteriorly
- Upper limbs at the sides with palms facing anteriorly
- Lower limbs are close with feet parallel and toes directed anteriorly
Anatomical Terms Directions
- Anterior (frontal) indicates toward the front
- Posterior (Dorsal) means towards the back
- Superior means towards the head
- Inferior describes direction towards the feet
- Proximal is closer to the root; the elbow is proximal to the wrist on the upper extremity
- Distal is away from the root; the elbow is distal to the shoulder joint on the upper extremity
- Median is a point/area on the midsagittal plane (median plane)
- Medial refers to a point/area closer to the midsagittal plane than another
- Lateral indicates a point/area further from the mid-sagittal/median plane; the outer elbow is lateral compared to its inner side
