Study Notes

Dorsal Cavity

  • Located towards the posterior side of the body.
  • Comprises the cranial cavity, which houses the brain, and the spinal cavity containing the spinal cord.

Cranial Cavity

  • Encloses and protects the brain.

Spinal Portion

  • Houses the spinal cord, which is an extension of the brain.

Ventral Cavity

  • Positioned on the anterior surface of the torso.
  • Divided by the diaphragm into two main sections: the thoracic cavity and the abdominopelvic cavity.

Thoracic Cavity

  • Contains vital structures such as the trachea, bronchi, lungs, esophagus, heart, and major blood vessels.
  • Includes smaller cavities: the pleural cavities (surrounding each lung) and the pericardial cavity (housing the heart).

Pleural Cavities

  • Two cavities that surround each lung, providing a space for lung expansion and contraction.

Pericardial Cavity

  • Encloses the heart and is located within the thoracic cavity.

Abdominopelvic Cavity

  • Defined by an imaginary line across the hip bones, separating it into upper abdominal and lower pelvic cavities.

Abdominal Cavity

  • Contains essential organs such as the stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, intestines (both small and large), and ovaries (in females).
  • Surrounded by the peritoneal cavity (peritoneum), which protects abdominal organs.

Pelvic Cavity

  • Houses the colon, rectum, urinary bladder, and uterus (in females).
