Study Notes

Canine Diseases

  • Canine Distemper:

    • An acute and subacute viral disease of carnivores, mostly dogs and foxes.
    • Often fatal, a multisystemic viral infection.
    • Characterized symptoms include diphasic fever, conjunctivitis, bronchitis, gastroenteritis, and nervous signs.
    • One of the most common canine infections worldwide.
    • Endemic in Egypt.
    • Young puppies and immunosuppressed dogs are highly susceptible.
    • Sheds virus through bodily secretions for 60-90 days post infection, transmitted by aerosols and contact.
    • Varies depending on the form of the disease.
  • Rabies:

    • Acute fatal encephalitis affecting warm-blooded mammals, mainly carnivores.
    • Transmitted through the saliva of rabid animals.
    • Characterized by altered behavior, motor irritation (mania), inability to swallow, and progressive ascending paralysis.
    • Endemic in many parts of the world, including Africa (including Egypt).
    • High mortality.
  • Canine Infectious Tracheobronchitis (Kennel Cough):

    • A collection of highly contagious canine respiratory diseases.
    • Characterized by acute tracheobronchitis.
    • Sudden onset of paroxysmal cough, often lasting for several days.
    • Most infections are self-limiting.
    • Common in all ages, with immunosuppressed and young dogs prone to complication.
    • Caused by viruses (e.g., canine parainfluenza virus, canine adenovirus (especially CAV-2), and reoviruses) and bacteria (e.g., Bordetella bronchiseptica), and mycoplasmas.
  • Canine Coronavirus and Rotavirus Enteritis:

    • Viral disease causing enteritis & diarrhea in puppies.
    • Canine coronavirus (CCV) and Canine rotavirus (CRV) are the causal agents.
    • Inactivated by detergents & lipid solvents or resistant to acids & lipid solvents.
    • Worldwide distributed, but prevalent in housed dogs.
  • Canine Parvovirus Enteritis:

    • Highly contagious disease affecting the gastrointestinal system, mainly puppies.
    • Symptoms include fever, anorexia, vomiting, depression, dehydration, hemorrhagic enteritis, and dysentery.
    • Deaths often occur, possibly caused by myocarditis.
    • Caused by Canine parvovirus 2 (CPV-2), a small, single-stranded DNA virus.
  • Infectious Canine Hepatitis:

    • Contagious viral disease affecting the liver and other organs.
    • Caused by Canine Adenovirus type 1 (CAV-1).
    • Characterized by fever, depression, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, jaundice, hepatitis, conjunctivitis ("blue eye"), and prolonged bleeding time. Often has sub-clinical form in adults.
    • Worldwide distributed and dogs under 1 year of age are highly susceptible.
  • Canine Herpesvirus Infection:

    • Acute fatal viral disease, mostly impacting young puppies.
    • Characterized by sudden death, dyspnea, rhinitis, serous/mucopurulent nasal discharges, meningoencephalitis and conjunctivitis.
    • Worldwide, but clinical disease is rare in older dogs.
    • Transmitted by direct contact, often during birth or through secretions.
  • Canine Infectious Diarrhea:

    • Acute disease of dogs characterized by diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, and occasionally death.
    • Multifactorial, potentially caused by viruses (coronavirus, rotavirus, adenovirus, canine distemper), bacteria (Campylobacter jejuni, E. coli, Salmonella spp, Clostridia), protozoa (Coccidia, Giardia), and helminths.
    • Often mild and self-limiting; severely affected animals show dysentery and rapid collapse.
