Study Notes

Overview of the 100m IFMR Range and Training Capabilities

  • The 100m IFMR is a fully enclosed and climate-controlled range optimized for intermediate to advanced individual and collective close quarters marksmanship and battle shooting for pistol, rifle, and light machine gun.

  • The range has 10, three-meter-wide firing lanes and a single target bank at the end of a 100m x 30m movement box, enabling firing points and forward movement of firers between 100m and 5m from the fixed target array.

  • Safety is considered paramount, and correct placement of targets is critical to safe practice, with positioning of targets, angles of fire, and ability of firers to be considered.

  • The target bank is fitted with three sets of twin lift and rotate targets per lane and paired lane lateral moving targets enabling standard static and advanced discriminatory (friend or foe) shooting as well as the engagement of moving targets at walking to running pace.

  • Ammunition restrictions apply, and certain natures of ammunition, explosives, and pyrotechniques are prohibited.

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is mandatory for all personnel participating in live fire training, including approved hearing and ballistic eye protection.

  • The range requires a Shooting Point Officer (SPO), Safety Supervisor, Ammunition NCO, Range Operator, and Medic, with minimum ranks and qualifications specified.

  • The range has a movement box enabling primary and secondary weapon training, battle shooting, and close quarter battle training within are and cross-lane shooting constraints.

  • The range has restrictions on arc of fire, quadrant elevation, and firing stance, with a maximum elevation of 100 mils/5.6 degrees in the main training area.

  • The range has no-go areas, hazard warnings, and treatment plans, including adherence to the lead management plan, use of suitable hearing protection, and briefing of non-firing personnel on Go/No Go areas.

  • Medical evacuation vehicles and facilities are required for all live fire practices, with the PGI Mezvad Clinic and Zayed Military Hospital specified as immediate and preferred priority 1 trauma care facilities.

  • General principles must be applied by the SPO, safety staff, and all range users to ensure safety, including only allowing qualified SPOs to supervise training and obtaining approval for non-standard practices.Non-Standard Training Authorization Process

  • The SPO conducts a risk assessment for non-standard training.

  • The MTFP Non-Standard Training Application (annex J & K) is used to request non-standard training.

  • The risk assessment and intended training requirement are submitted through the application.

  • The requesting unit must receive written authorization for non-standard training.

  • The non-standard training application must be submitted at least 7 days before the intended training date.

  • Non-standard training refers to training that deviates from standard procedures.

  • Non-standard training may pose additional risks and requires a risk assessment.

  • The MTFP Non-Standard Training Application includes annex J & K.

  • Annex J provides guidance on risk assessment for non-standard training.

  • Annex K provides a template for the non-standard training application.

  • The non-standard training authorization process is necessary to ensure safety and mitigate risks.

  • The process requires communication and collaboration between the SPO and requesting unit.
