Study Notes
Amino Acid Classification
- Amino acids can be classified into three main categories: nonpolar, polar, and electrically charged.
Nonpolar Amino Acids
- Glycine (Gly), Alanine (Ala), Valine (Val), Leucine (Leu), Isoleucine (Ile), Methionine (Met), Tryptophan (Trp), Phenylalanine (Phe), and Proline (Pro) are nonpolar amino acids.
- These amino acids have no charge and are hydrophobic.
Polar Amino Acids
- Serine (Ser), Threonine (Thr), Cysteine (Cys), Tyrosine (Tyr), Asparagine (Asn), and Glutamine (Gln) are polar amino acids.
- These amino acids have a partial charge and are hydrophilic.
Electrically Charged Amino Acids
Acidic Amino Acids
- Aspartic Acid (Asp) and Glutamic Acid (Glu) are acidic amino acids.
- These amino acids have a negative charge.
Basic Amino Acids
- Lysine (Lys), Arginine (Arg), and Histidine (His) are basic amino acids.
- These amino acids have a positive charge.
This quiz covers the classification and properties of amino acids, including nonpolar, polar, and electrically charged types. Identify and learn about the different amino acids and their characteristics.
