Study Notes
American Bulldog History
- Ancestors of American bulldogs were brought to British North American colonies, where they worked on small farms and ranches.
- Before 1884, no records were kept, and instead of breeds, there were informal landrace strains that depended on the dog's origin.
- Dogs resembling bulldogs were first mentioned by the ancient Romans as "pugnaces Britanniae".
- Bull-baiting was a popular activity in England from the 13th century, and the first known mention of bulldogs by name is in a 17th-century letter.
Development of American Bulldogs
- In the 19th century, breeders in the UK minimized the aggressive and athletic traits of bulldogs after bull-baiting was banned.
- In the US, breeding decisions were based on temperament and work abilities as farm dogs, rather than bloodline.
- Several separate dog strains of bulldog-type were kept by ranchers as utilitarian dogs, working to catch cattle and kill predatory wildlife.
Revitalization and Recognition
- After World War II, the breed was on the verge of extinction, but John D. Johnson and Alan Scott helped rescue it.
- Johnson and Scott worked together to revive the breed, creating what is now known as the Standard or Scott-type American Bulldog.
- The United Kennel Club recognized the American Bulldog as a breed on January 1, 1999, and the American Kennel Club added it to the Foundation Stock Service in November 2019.
American Bulldog Characteristics
- The American Bulldog is a stocky, well-built, strong-looking dog with a large head and a muscular build.
- The coat is short and generally smooth, requiring little maintenance.
- The breed is a light-to-moderate shedder, and colors include white, red, black, brindle, and many other patterns.
- Black pigmentation on the nose and eye rims is traditionally preferred.
