- Amalgamation was a British policy to unify different British colonies and protectorates into a single state.
Factors Leading to Amalgamation
- Administrative efficiency
- Economic interest in trade
- Conquest and annexation of Lagos as a colony by John Beecroft in 1851
- Integration of Igbos and Niger Delta as the southern protectorate
- Unification of the Middle belt (formerly Middle Niger protectorate) with the Northern protectorate around 1900
Key Personalities Involved
- John Beecroft: Conquered and annexed Lagos as a colony in 1851
- Flora Shaw: Coined the name "Nigeria" from the term 'Niger area'
- Fedrick Lord Lugard: Became the first Governor General of Nigeria in 1914
- J.C Wedgewood: Moved a motion in 1910 to unify most of the colonies
- L.Harcourt: Then Secretary of states for colonies, supported the unification process to offset the cost of administration incurred by Britain
Reasons for Amalgamation
- To use funds generated in the south to support the administration of the north
- To recruit educated natives from the south into the colonial civil service to help in administration
- Geographical proximity of the two areas (Northern and Southern protectorates)
- Introduction of indirect rule in the south as in the north
- To utilize resources from the south to augment the scarce revenue from the north
- Personal gains and selfish interest of the then governor of the Northern protectorate
The Amalgamation Process
- The Selbourne Committee was constituted in 1898 to suggest how the Nigerian territories would be governed
- The committee recommended the unification of the various areas, implemented in the north in 1900 and the south in 1906, and finally unified in 1914
- Sir Frederick Lugard's proposal (9th May 1913) included 14 recommendations, among which were:
- The establishment of a central government headed by the Governor General
- The Governor General was to be responsible to the Secretary of states for the colonies in London
