Repression: Unconscious strategies used to protect the ego from anxiety by pushing threatening thoughts, feelings, or memories into the unconscious mind.

Regression: Returning to earlier, less mature behaviors in response to stress or anxiety, like bed-wetting in an adult.

Sublimation: Channeling unacceptable impulses into socially acceptable behaviors, such as directing anger into sports.

Displacement: Redirecting negative emotions from a source to a less threatening target. Example: A person angry with their boss taking their anger out on their family.

Denial: Refusing to acknowledge a painful reality or unpleasant truth, refusing to admit your loved one has passed.

Reaction Formation: Expressing the opposite of one's true feelings to conceal unacceptable ones - someone who hates a person but being excessively nice to them.

Rationalization: Creating a seemingly logical explanation for behavior, concealing true motives and feelings. For instance, making excuses for failures and blaming others.

Compensation: Overemphasizing strengths in one area to compensate for perceived weaknesses in another. Like excelling in a sport to make up for feeling insecure about academics.

Escape: Coping mechanism involving physically or psychologically withdrawing from a threatening situation, daydreaming and avoiding reality.

Projection: Attributing one's own unwanted thoughts, feelings, or impulses to someone else. Blaming a partner for problems in the relationship while denying that their part played a role.
