Study Notes
Simple Equations
- Equations with one variable on one side, e.g. x + 7 = 15, 3y = 21, a - 5 = 8, etc.
- Each equation has a unique solution, e.g. x = 8, y = 7, a = 13, etc.
Equations with Variable on Both Sides
- Equations with variables on both sides, e.g. 7c + 5 = 3c - 15, -12d + 18 + 4d = -22, etc.
- Requires rearrangement to isolate the variable, e.g. 7c - 3c = -15 - 5, -12d + 4d = -22 - 18, etc.
Slightly More Complex Equations
- Equations with variables inside parentheses, e.g. 3(x + 2) = 2(x - 1), 5(2y - 3) = 3(4y + 1), etc.
- Requires distribution and rearrangement to isolate the variable, e.g. 3x + 6 = 2x - 2, 10y - 15 = 12y + 3, etc.
- Some equations may require combining like terms, e.g. 4(a - 5) = -2(3a + 2), 7(2b + 1) = 5(3b - 4), etc.
