Flashcards
Tertiary alcohol
Tertiary alcohol
A type of alcohol where the carbon atom bearing the hydroxyl group is connected to three carbon atoms.
Secondary alcohol
Secondary alcohol
A type of alcohol where the carbon atom bearing the hydroxyl group is connected to two carbon atoms.

Alcohols and Phenols
- Alcohols are compounds containing a hydroxyl group (-OH) attached to a carbon atom.
- Alcohols are classified as primary, secondary, or tertiary based on the number of carbon atoms attached to the carbon atom with the hydroxyl group.
- Primary: One carbon atom attached
- Secondary: Two carbon atoms attached
- Tertiary: Three carbon atoms attached
- Phenols have a hydroxyl group directly attached to an aromatic ring.
- Phenols are more acidic than alcohols due to the delocalization of the negative charge in the conjugate base.
- Solubility in water decreases with increasing size of the alkyl groups in alcohols and phenols, due to the hydrophobic effect of non-polar groups.
Classification of Alcohols
- Primary alcohol: Carbon bearing the hydroxyl group is bonded to only one other carbon atom.
- Secondary alcohol: Carbon bearing the hydroxyl group is bonded to two other carbon atoms.
- Tertiary alcohol: Carbon bearing the hydroxyl group is bonded to three other carbon atoms.
Ritter Test
- Used to differentiate primary and secondary alcohols (from tertiary).
- Potassium permanganate (KMnOâ‚„) oxidizes alcohols:
- Primary alcohols first to aldehydes, then to carboxylic acids.
- Secondary alcohols to ketones.
- Tertiary alcohols do not oxidize with KMnOâ‚„.
- The color change from purple KMnOâ‚„ to brown MnOâ‚‚ indicates oxidation and can be used to distinguish these alcohols.
