Airway Management Devices
- Airway management is essential when a patient cannot protect their airway or adequately oxygenate or ventilate.
Oropharyngeal Airway
- Anatomically shaped, inserted through the mouth into the oropharynx, above the tongue.
- Maintains patency of the upper airway in cases of obstruction due to decreased consciousness.
Nasopharyngeal Airway
- Inserted through the nose into the nasopharynx, bypassing the mouth and oropharynx.
- The distal end is positioned above the epiglottis and below the base of the tongue.
Endotracheal Tube
Tracheostomy Tubes
- Curved plastic tubes inserted through the second, third or fourth tracheal cartilage rings.
Cricothyroidotomy Tube
- Used in emergency situations, inserted into the trachea through the cricothyroid cartilage.
Laryngeal Mask Airway
- Frequently used as an alternative to face masks or tracheal tubes during anesthesia.
- It doesn't protect against aspiration of gastric contents.
- Rotation can lead to complete airway obstruction.
- Cricoid pressure may hinder proper placement.
- Downfolding of the epiglottis, occurring in 20-56% of patients, can cause airway obstruction.
Face Masks
- Designed to fit the face anatomically, available in different sizes for various age groups.
- Connected to the breathing system via the angle piece.
Components of Face Masks
- Body of the mask rests on an air-filled cuff.
- Proximal end has a 22mm inlet connection to the angle piece.
- Some designs have clamps for a harness.
- Angle piece has a 90° bend with a 22mm end for attachment.
Problems with Face Masks
- Excessive pressure can injure branches of the trigeminal or facial nerves.
- Achieving an airtight seal can be difficult.
- Improper application can cause eye trauma.
