Study Notes
-
Michael S. Nolan, author of the textbook on Air Traffic Control, acknowledges the contributions of numerous individuals and organizations in bringing his book to publication over five editions from 1990 to the present.
-
The first edition was produced in 1990 through a team at Wadsworth and Delmar Associates, including Anne ScanlanRohrer, Jackie Estrada, and others.
-
The second and third editions were coordinated by Ruth Cottrell and Jennie Burger, Tobi Giannone and Marie Carigma-Sambilay, respectively.
-
The fourth and fifth editions were led by Andy Sieverman, David Boelio, and their teams.
-
Nolan thanks his wife Barbara and children Linda, Erin, and David for their support during the project.
-
Nolan is a former air traffic controller with various licenses and certifications and currently teaches aviation technology at Purdue University.
-
Early aviation developments:
- The Wright brothers' first flight in 1903 was met with skepticism.
- Aviation was considered a pastime and unregulated, leading to crashes and public fear.
- Despite this, pilots demonstrated the usefulness of airplanes during World War I, and various applications were discovered, including mail service, pesticide applications, and transatlantic flights.
-
Airmail service:
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Post Office Department, and U.S. Army worked together to establish airmail service from 1918 to 1925.
- Full transcontinental service was achieved.
-
Organizations:
- The Post Office Department, National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), and Civil Aeronautics Authority (CAA) are mentioned as key organizations involved in air traffic control.
- Labor unions, such as the Air Line Pilots Association, American Federation of Government Employees, and the Air Traffic Controllers Organization, have represented air traffic controllers.
- Other organizations include the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), National Air Traffic Services, and the Air Transport Association.
-
Methods used by air traffic controllers:
- Early methods of aircraft separation included visual contact, radio communication, and hand signals.
- The use of radio navigation aids and electronic equipment became more common.
-
Impact of 9/11 on the air traffic control system:
- The events of September 11, 2001, led to significant changes in the air traffic control system.
- New security measures were implemented, including enhanced screening, heightened surveillance, and changes to communication procedures.
- The FAA implemented a national airspace system with a centralized command and control center.
- The air traffic control system was restructured to increase efficiency and improve safety.
-
ATC facilities transmit flight plan information to proper ATC facilities if a pilot needs to file it while airborne.
-
Flight plans require following information: type (VFR, IFR, DVFR), aircraft identification number, type & navigational equipment, cruising airspeed, departure point & time, requested altitude, route, destination, estimated time en route, any remarks, fuel on board, alternate airport, and contact info.
-
IFR flight plans are processed & cleared by ATC, VFR plans kept as records.
-
Pilots operating IFR must receive clearance before starting the flight from ATC, including aircraft identification & clearance limit (destination or intermediate point), departure procedure if needed, & any routing instructions.
-
Departure procedures (DPs) are assigned by ATC to ensure safe and efficient departure, may include turn or heading instructions, and are published and sold by the same agencies that sell IAP charts.
-
Aircraft type is identified using FAA codes, navigational capabilities with unique suffix codes.
-
Examples of aircraft types & suffix codes: Airbus A-380-800 A388, Beech 200 King Air BE20, Boeing 737-900 B739, Cessna Citation 650 C650, Cirrus SR-22 SR22, Diamond DA-42 DA42, Embraer EMB-190 E190, Gates Learjet 55 LJ55, General Dynamics F16 Falcon F16, Piper PA-28 Warrior P28A.
-
Equipment capabilities include DME, transponder, Mode C, RNAV, FMS, WAAS, and RNP.
