Study Notes
Air Management
- The objective is to avoid Hazardous Atmosphere/IDLH atmosphere before the low air alarm activation.
- Crew members should maintain awareness of their air status and check air levels when entering a new area or floor.
- Identify an exit strategy prior to entry and consider transitioning out of operations when air is at 50% cylinder capacity (2250 PSI).
Tactical Objectives
Engine Company Tactical Objectives
- Size-up the situation and locate the fire, including assessing structure, smoke conditions, access, ventilation points, occupants, and hose lay.
- Confine the fire by placing a hoseline between the fire and occupants.
- Extinguish the fire with the proper hoseline and nozzle combination.
- Protect exposures by eliminating fire extension and evacuating occupants.
- Provide a water supply through hydrants, standpipes, and sprinkler systems.
Water Supply
- Establish a water supply, potentially requiring Rural Water Supply.
RIT (Rapid Intervention Team)
- A RIT team consists of at least 4 firefighters, including a company officer or acting company officer, to deal with rapid rescue situations.
Engine Companies
- Engine companies address the following during initial fire suppression:
- Locate, confine, and extinguish the fire.
- Conduct a rapid primary search of the fire room or unit.
- Establish a water supply.
- Protect exposures.
- Implement Two-Out and RIT Team protocols.
- Applying water efficiently and safely is a priority.
Standby Team
- A Standby Team is assigned prior to RIT establishment, consisting of at least two firefighters available for immediate assistance or rescue outside the hazard area.
- Once relieved by RIT, the Standby Team can become a Backup Team.
Ladder Company Tactical Objectives
- Ladder company objectives include:
- Search & Rescue, often during primary search or as part of VEIS.
- Ventilation through various methods.
- Ladder provision for access, egress, and rescue operations.
- Forcible Entry, coordinated with command.
- Overhaul, locating and mitigating hidden fire.
- Salvage, saving property and reducing damage.
Ladder Company Assignment by Priority
- Priorities for Ladder Companies are:
- 1st Priority: Life Safety
- 2nd Priority: Ventilation
- 3rd Priority: Forcible Entry and Ladders
- 4th Priority: Utilities, Overhaul, and Salvage
- Note: Salvage may be prioritized higher in certain situations, such as preventing water damage.
