Study Notes

Air Law 1 - Chapter 3: Rules of the Air

  • This document is controlled, all rights reserved. No part may be reproduced without permission from the Chief Executive Officer of Flight Training Adelaide.
  • All rules and regulations must be followed for the safety and efficiency of air travel.
  • Rules exist for aircraft to maintain order, prevent accidents, and ensure efficient movement in airspace, similar to road traffic.
  • Pilots of large aircraft like airliners have a high responsibility for passenger safety and other aircraft in the airspace.
  • Aircraft precedence determines which aircraft must give way to another.
  • General rules of precedence include rules for Overtaking Aircraft, Converging Aircraft, and aircraft in different classes and/or taxiing.
  • Aircraft approaching head-on will change direction to the right to prevent a collision.
  • Aircraft approaching for a landing will also change course by way of ensuring that the higher aircraft to lower.
  • The aircraft in higher levels typically gives way to the one on a lower level.
  • Aircraft with emergencies have priority.
  • Aircraft must maintain a safe distance around other aircraft.
  • Aircraft must not be operated too close creating potential collision hazards.
  • Pilots must monitor other aircraft around them.
  • Rules exist for landing procedures, such as the approach course.
  • Rules exist for turning after takeoff, except in an emergency.
  • Aircraft should avoid flying too close to large populated areas.
  • Rules exist for minimum heights while flying, whether aerobatics or for emergencies
  • Different rules for taking off if the weight of the aircraft differs.
  • Separation rules apply when taking off and landing aircraft.
  • Some types of aircraft need to have more distance compared to others for safe flight.
  • Procedures in the event of a missed approach are dictated by guidelines.
  • Rules concerning flying over public gatherings and/or large public events.
  • Rules on smoking and use of drugs and alcohol are strict and enforced. Consuming alcohol before or during a flight is strictly prohibited.

Aircraft Precedence

  • In situations where multiple aircraft are converging, the aircraft on the right generally has right-of-way.
  • If overtaking another, the aircraft being overtaken has precedence.
  • If heading in the same direction, the aircraft on the right has precedence.
  • Balloons, gliders, and airships have different priorities when converging or crossing.
  • Powered aircraft give way to gliders; airships give way to balloons; gliders give way to balloons.
  • The pilot in command of proceeding aircraft must observe other aircraft in the airspace.
