Study Notes

Yard Maintenance

  • Yard maintenance is crucial for efficient freight stock operation
  • Factors affecting good and quality examinations/repairs include yard maintenance standards
  • Examination methods are described in subsequent paragraphs

Notification of Examination Points

  • Railways notify nodal examination points authorized to issue brake power certificates
  • These nodal points must have facilities such as paved pathways, welding points, lighting, etc., for air brake train examination
  • Brake Power Certificates (BPC) are issued only from these nodal points

Pattern of Freight Train Examination

  • End-to-End Examination:

    • Empty rakes are typically examined intensely, except during back loading at stations or sidings
    • After intensive examination, the rake is moved to the loading station as per traffic requirements
    • Empty rake's BPC might not have a destination, but after loading, operating staff (or commercial staff) indicate the destination on the BPC
    • No loco pilot can move a loaded train without a clear destination on the BPC
    • After unloading, the rake is re-examined in empty condition
  • Premium Examination:

    • Premium rakes have a 12-day validity BPC with a 3-day grace period for examination in empty condition
    • Specific conditions are needed to be met for the rake to be certified as premium. This includes examination in an empty condition and examination at nominated examination points.
    • BPCs for premium rakes are valid for 12 days from the date of issue
    • For these rakes multiple loading/unloading are allowed
  • Close Circuit Examination:

    • Ideally, close circuit air brake rakes should be formed from off-ROH and off-POH wagons
    • Thorough maintenance history (bogie, draft gear, coupler, AB system, wheel, & CTRB) is maintained by the Base Depot
    • Originating brake power for air braked goods trains should be 100% with sufficient brake block thickness
    • Base depot should record details regarding enroute detachments, brake power and detachments during examination
    • Each BPC of a CC rake is valid for 6000/7500 kms or 30 days (whichever is earlier)
    • The kilometrage must be accurately recorded

Post Loading and Post Tipping Examination

  • After tippling, the rake is checked by TXR staff or Guard and Loco pilot (if TXR staff isn't available)

  • Post-tippling inspections vary based on local conditions

  • Guard and driver checks should be done based on established formats

GDR Check

  • A GDR check is necessary for post loading/back loading of a rake
  • After tippling, a post-tippling check may be performed by Guard & Loco pilot

Examination Details

  • Rolling-in/Terminating examination is conducted on trains entering the yard
  • Intensive examination includes repairs, detachment of damaged wagons, and brake testing, done on originating trains
  • Brake continuity of the formed load is confirmed

Freight Train Examination and Repairs

  • Inspect running gear fittings, brake gear and spring gears, draw and buffing gear.

  • Repair any deficiencies in safety fittings, brackets, and loops

  • Replace worn brake blocks

  • Correct fitment of washers, cotters, and pins

  • Ensuring correct functioning of empty load devices

  • Inspection of covered wagon doors.

Air Brake Testing

  • Testing of single pipe and twin pipe air brake rakes are performed using dedicated test rigs.
  • Important considerations include establishing stable pressure, monitoring pressure drop, checking for leaks, and inspecting components like distributor valves, cylinders
  • Important parameters like pressure drop is carefully monitored.

Service Application and Release Test

  • The driver's automatic brake valve is moved toward service application
  • Brake blocks are checked for proper application.
  • Piston strokes of each wagon are checked

Examination of Container Trains (BLC/BLL Rakes)

  • Examination points are developed, including infrastructural facilities
  • BLC/BLL rakes are examined in empty condition (without containers)
  • Every Close Circuit (CC) rake must be thoroughly examined at its base depot, and a fresh BPC issued, valid for 6000 km or 30 days (whichever comes first)
  • On completion of the stipulated distance/time, CC rakes must be returned to the base depot

BPC Formats

  • Format I is for end-to-end examined goods rakes

  • Format II is for premium rakes

  • Format III is for close-circuit rakes

  • Information like train number, loco number, brake power, and pressure values is recorded in each format
