Study Notes

AGR 302: Rainfed Agriculture and Watershed Management (1+1)

  • Lec. No. 1: Dry farming in India, significance and scope, history of dry land agriculture. Dryland agriculture is crucial for India for food, fodder, fuel, and fiber production,
  • Lec. No. 2: Dry farming and rainfed farming: definitions, characteristics, and distinctions . Arid regions have less than 750mm annual rainfall; dryland farming has 75-120 growing days and requires moisture conservation practices; and rainfed farming has more than 1150mm rainfall and more than 120 growing days, focusing on water disposal.
  • Lec. No. 3: Distribution of arid and semi-arid regions globally, in India, and Tamil Nadu. Arid regions are categorized by their thermal and moisture regimes (tropical or temperate). In India, arid regions include portions of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and parts of other states; semi-arid regions are characterized by alternating wet and dry seasons, with varying levels of rainfall.
  • Lec. No. 4: Major crops of dry lands in India and Tamil Nadu. Important crops grown in dryland areas include sorghum, pearl millet, finger millet (millets), mustards, rapeseed, groundnut, pigeon pea, gram, and lentils (oilseeds and pulses).
  • Lec. No. 5: Characteristics of dry land farming and major constraints for crop production. Constraints include vagaries of monsoon (variable rainfall, late and early withdrawal, and prolonged dry spells), high atmospheric temperatures, low humidity high evaporation, various soil properties (shallow, alkaline, and degraded soils), and socioeconomic factors (small and marginal farmers, low capital, and lack of access to resources).
  • Lec. No. 6: Drought definition, classification, and effect on crops. Drought is defined by various factors including intensity and duration (permanent, seasonal, contingent). Different classifications (meteorological, agricultural, hydrological) exist. Drought has significant negative impacts on crop production due to water stress at different crop growth stages.
  • Lec. No. 7: Drought management strategies and contingency crop planning & mid-season correction. Contingency planning is crucial. Management tools include appropriate crop selection, timely sowing, water conservation. techniques, and mid-season adjustments in response to drought conditions.
  • Lec. No. 8: Mulching, anti-transpirants, in-situ soil moisture conservation techniques and approaches. Soil moisture conservation techniques include mulching, anti-transpirants, and in-situ soil moisture conservation techniques that can help to increase water availability in the soil. These approaches are necessary to improve crop yields in dry land agriculture.
