Archaeology and African Cultural Heritage

Definition of Heritage

Tangible Heritage
- Tangible heritage includes physical and touchable inherited legacies, such as physical natural and cultural legacies of a group or society.
Intangible Heritage
- Intangible heritage includes non-physical or non-touchable cultural, natural, and supernatural practices and legacies of a group or society, such as inherited intangible cultural values, beliefs, oral accounts, customs, perceptions, traditions, folklore, myths, and unwritten philosophical or abstract perceptions.
Attributes of Heritage Resources
- Heritage resources are inherited from the past and present generations.
- They can be preserved, protected, rehabilitated, maintained, or destroyed in the present.
- Intangible heritage is difficult to preserve but can be maintained by social customs, rules, and norms.
