Aerial Company Operations

  • Each fire incident presents unique challenges necessitating flexible Aerial Company operations.
  • Standard Operating Guideline establishes a standardized approach for assigning responsibilities for Aerial Company functions.

Typical Truck Company Functions

  • Primary tasks essential for a coordinated effort and favorable incident outcomes include:
    • Search and rescue operations.
    • Elevated victim rescue procedures.
    • Ventilation techniques for smoke and heat removal.
    • Forcible entry into structures.
    • Laddering buildings for access.
    • Provision of elevated master streams for firefighting.

Incident Command Responsibilities

  • In the absence of an Aerial's immediate response, the Incident Commander may delegate Truck Company functions to Engine or Rescue Companies.
  • The prioritization of tasks is determined by the Incident Commander as per SOG 200-02.

Aerial Response and Communication

  • Aerial responders should request assignments from the Incident Commander when approaching the scene.

Apparatus Positioning

  • Maintain a clearance of at least 25 feet behind the Aerial to avoid blocking ground ladders.
  • Driver Operators must position Aerials away from electrical wires for safety.
  • Aerials should be positioned based on the immediate need, such as:
    • Elevated rescue on side Delta necessitates setup on side Delta.
    • Defensive master streams on side Bravo require setup on side Bravo.
  • The first arriving Aerial Company Officer is responsible for efficient use of resources (Engine or Aerial capacity).
  • Ensure arriving units provide room for Aerial operations without impeding Engine Company efforts.

Supersession History

  • Previous versions of this guideline include SOG #1320 (issued on 03/15/1995 and updated on 09/01/2005) and clerical changes on 05/01/2018 for SOG 420-09.
