Flashcards

Adipose Tissue

A connective tissue in which fat-storing cells (adipocytes) are predominant, acting as storage depots for neutral fats, especially triglycerides.

White Adipose Tissue

Adipose tissue containing cells each with one large cytoplasmic droplet; designed for long-term energy storage.

Signet-ring appearance

A lipid-storage cell with a nucleus pushed to the periphery.

White Adipose Tissue Distribution

The fat tissue distribution changes based on life stage, where newborns have even fat distribution; after puberty, distribution is sex specific.

Brown Adipose Tissue

A type of adipose tissue that generates heat by warming the blood using high amounts of mitochondria.

Adipose tissue containing adipocytes that contain many small lipid inclusions.

Study Notes

  • Adipose tissue is a connective tissue

Adipose Tissue

  • Large cells are found in isolation or in small groups within loose or dense irregular connective tissue.
  • It occurs in large aggregates.
  • This connective tissue is where fat-storing cells or adipocytes predominate.
  • It represents 15% to 20% of the body weight in men, and more in women.
  • It is a storage depot for neutral fats, chiefly triglycerides.
  • White and brown adipose tissues are different in color, location, function, and structure.

White Adipose Tissue

  • White adipose connective tissue is more common than brown.
  • Cells each contains one large cytoplasmic droplet.
  • It offers long-term energy storage.
  • When completely developed, a white adipocyte is very large, between 50 and 150 umm in diameter, and is unilocular (each fat cell contains only one fat vacuole).
  • It has a signet-ring appearance, where the nucleus is pushed to the periphery, as the cytoplasm is full of fat.
  • Lipomas are tumors of fatty tissue.
  • The distribution of white adipose tissue changes significantly through childhood and adult life.
  • In newborns and babies, distribution is even throughout the body, but it differs after puberty.
    • In females, it is around the belly, buttock, and breast region.
    • In males, it is usually around the abdomen.
  • Adipocytes develop from mesenchymal stem cells.

Brown Adipose Tissue

  • Brown adipose tissue constitutes 2%–5% of the newborn body weight.
  • It is located mainly in the back, neck, and shoulders of newborns.
  • In adults, it is found only in scattered areas: around the kidneys, adrenal glands, aorta, and mediastinum.
  • Brown fat color is due to very abundant mitochondria and the large number of blood capillaries.
  • Brown adipocytes contain many small lipid inclusions, that are multilocular.
  • The tissues principal function is heat production and warming the blood, also known as thermogenesis.
  • Cells of brown fat are smaller than white adipocytes, and the nucleus is more centrally located.
  • Brown fat is burned to maintain temperature, and can also be seen in hibernating animals.
