Addition
- Definition: The operation of combining two or more numbers to get a total or a sum.
- Notation: The plus sign (+) is used to indicate addition.
- Properties:
- Commutative property: The order of the numbers does not change the result. (e.g., 2 + 3 = 3 + 2)
- Associative property: The order in which we add numbers does not change the result. (e.g., (2 + 3) + 4 = 2 + (3 + 4))
- Distributive property: We can add a number to each addend separately. (e.g., 2 + (3 + 4) = 2 + 3 + 4)
- Examples:
- 2 + 3 = 5
- 5 + 1 = 6
- 7 + 2 = 9
Subtraction
- Definition: The operation of finding the difference between two numbers.
- Notation: The minus sign (-) is used to indicate subtraction.
- Properties:
- Not commutative: The order of the numbers changes the result. (e.g., 5 - 3 ≠ 3 - 5)
- Not associative: The order in which we subtract numbers changes the result. (e.g., (5 - 3) - 2 ≠ 5 - (3 - 2))
- Examples:
- 5 - 3 = 2
- 8 - 2 = 6
- 9 - 4 = 5
Operations
Addition
- Combines two or more numbers to get a total or a sum
- Uses the plus sign (+) notation
- Has three properties:
- Commutative property: order of numbers doesn't change the result
- Associative property: order of adding numbers doesn't change the result
- Distributive property: can add a number to each part separately
- Examples of addition:
- 2 + 3 = 5
- 5 + 1 = 6
- 7 + 2 = 9
Subtraction
- Finds the difference between two numbers
- Uses the minus sign (-) notation
- Has two properties:
- Not commutative: order of numbers changes the result
- Not associative: order of subtracting numbers changes the result
- Examples of subtraction:
- 5 - 3 = 2
- 8 - 2 = 6
- 9 - 4 = 5
