Study Notes

Acute Hepatitis

  • Defined as a syndrome leading to liver necro-inflammation and elevated liver function tests for less than 6 months.

Acute Liver Failure (ALF)

  • Characterized by rapid decline in hepatic function, evident through jaundice, coagulopathy (INR >1.5), and hepatic encephalopathy (HE).
  • Occurs in patients without prior liver disease.
  • Classified based on the time from jaundice onset to HE development:
    • Hyperacute: HE develops within 7 days.
    • Acute: HE occurs between 8 and 28 days.
    • Subacute: HE manifests between 29 days and 12 weeks.

Causes of Acute Hepatitis

  • Infectious Causes:
    • Viral: Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E.
    • Bacterial:
      • Gram-negative bacteria associated with acute hepatitis:
        • Typhoid fever (caused by Salmonella typhi).
        • Tularemia (caused by Francisella tularensis).
        • Septicemia.
        • Rickettsial infections, such as Typhus.
        • Spirochete infections, including Weil's disease (caused by Leptospira) and Relapsing fever (caused by Borrelia).
        • Q fever (caused by Coxiella burnetii).
        • Mycoplasma infections.
