Acute Hepatitis
- Defined as a syndrome leading to liver necro-inflammation and elevated liver function tests for less than 6 months.
Acute Liver Failure (ALF)
- Characterized by rapid decline in hepatic function, evident through jaundice, coagulopathy (INR >1.5), and hepatic encephalopathy (HE).
- Occurs in patients without prior liver disease.
- Classified based on the time from jaundice onset to HE development:
- Hyperacute: HE develops within 7 days.
- Acute: HE occurs between 8 and 28 days.
- Subacute: HE manifests between 29 days and 12 weeks.
Causes of Acute Hepatitis

Infectious Causes:
- Viral: Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E.

Bacterial:
- Gram-negative bacteria associated with acute hepatitis:
- Typhoid fever (caused by Salmonella typhi).
- Tularemia (caused by Francisella tularensis).
- Septicemia.
- Rickettsial infections, such as Typhus.
- Spirochete infections, including Weil's disease (caused by Leptospira) and Relapsing fever (caused by Borrelia).
- Q fever (caused by Coxiella burnetii).
- Mycoplasma infections.
- Gram-negative bacteria associated with acute hepatitis:
- Parasitic: Toxoplasma infection.
