Types of Verbs
- There are three types of verbs: action, linking, and helping verbs.
Action Verbs
- An action verb expresses action and tells what a person or a thing does.
- Example: Muskrats swim in marshes, We built a fantastic sandcastle.
- To identify an action verb, ask if the word expresses something you can do.
- Example: Can you swim? (Yes, swim is an action verb.)
Linking Verbs
- A linking verb links the subject of the sentence with information about it.
- Also known as "state-of-being verbs".
- Examples: The car is a convertible, The new car looks shiny.
- In these examples, is and looks link the subject (car) to information about it (convertible and shiny).
- Linking verbs describe the state of being of the subject.
- Note: Some verbs can be both action and linking verbs, depending on the sentence.
- Example: Look can be an action verb (I looked out the window) or a linking verb (The new car looks shiny).
