Study Notes

Acoustic Contamination

Noise Pollution

  • Definition: Unwanted or excessive sound that can harm humans, animals, and the environment
  • Sources:
    • Transportation (vehicles, airplanes, etc.)
    • Industrial activities (construction, manufacturing, etc.)
    • Consumer products (appliances, music, etc.)
    • Natural sources (thunder, earthquakes, etc.)
  • Effects:
    • Hearing loss and impairment
    • Cardiovascular problems
    • Sleep disturbance
    • Decreased quality of life
    • Impact on wildlife habitats and communication

Sound Waves

  • Definition: Mechanical waves that propagate through a medium (air, water, etc.)
  • Characteristics:
    • Frequency: Number of oscillations per second (measured in Hz)
    • Amplitude: Maximum displacement of the wave from its equilibrium position
    • Wavelength: Distance between two consecutive points on the wave
    • Speed: Distance traveled by the wave per unit time
  • Types:
    • Infrasound: Frequencies below 20 Hz (inaudible to humans)
    • Audible sound: Frequencies between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz (human hearing range)
    • Ultrasound: Frequencies above 20,000 Hz (inaudible to humans)
  • Measurement:
    • Sound pressure level (SPL): Measured in decibels (dB)
    • Weighting: A, B, C, and Z weightings account for human hearing sensitivity at different frequencies

Learn about noise pollution, its sources, effects, and sound waves characteristics, including frequency, amplitude, wavelength, and speed. Understand the types of sound waves, including infrasound, audible sound, and ultrasound, and how sound pressure level is measured.
