Paris Agreement
The Paris Agreement is an international treaty under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that aims to address climate change by limiting global temperature rise this century to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5 degrees. It was adopted by consensus by all participating countries on December 12, 2015, during the COP21 conference in Le Bourget, France.
Climate Change Mitigation
Mitigation refers to actions taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with the goal of preventing further climate change. Significant progress has been made since 2015, particularly in reducing emissions from energy production and transport sectors due to increased renewable energy sources, including solar and wind power, increasing cost competitiveness of low carbon electricity generation technologies, and continued improvements in energy efficiency across multiple sectors. However, more needs to be done to meet the goals set out in the agreement.
National Contributions
National Determined Contributions (NDCs) are individual plans submitted by each country detailing their post-2020 targets for reducing emissions and/or adapting to the impacts of climate change. Countries are expected to update their NDCs every five years and increase ambition over time. As of November 2022, only 85 of the 197 Parties have communicated new or updated NDCs since 2015.
Global Warming
Global warming refers to the observed increase in Earth's average temperature, primarily caused by human activities releasing large amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The Paris Agreement seeks to keep the increase in global temperatures this century to well below 2 degrees Celsius, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial times. To achieve these goals, significant and sustained reduction of global greenhouse gas emissions is required.
Adaptation Strategies
Adaptation strategies aim to help countries adjust to the impacts of climate change, particularly those most vulnerable to its effects.
