Traffic Signals and Signs

• Turn signals indicate actions like pulling away from the curb, changing lanes, and turning.
• An alternative signal for a left turn is pointing your left arm straight out the window.
• If brake lights malfunction, signal a stop by pointing your arm straight down out the left window.

Passing and Lane Changes

• Avoid passing a vehicle when within 100 feet of intersections, railroad crossings, hills, curves, bridges, or tunnels.
• Before passing, check that the road is clear using rear view and side mirrors.
• You can move back into your lane after passing when you see the other vehicle in your rear view mirror.

Driver Responsibilities While Driving

• When being passed, maintain or reduce speed and stay to the right edge of your lane.
• If needing to turn left from the far right lane, drive past the turn to find a safe place to turn around.
• Always yield to oncoming traffic when making a left turn and signal 100 feet before turning.

Parking Regulations

• Permits are required for handicap parking spaces.
• Do not park within 15 feet of a fire hydrant.
• At night, ensure visibility by leaving the parking lights and headlights on dim and allowing room for other vehicles to pass.

Legal and Safe Parking Practices

• Park legally; you cannot use a disabled parking space if the disabled individual is not present.
• Initiate parallel parking by aligning with the car in front of your designated space.

• When parked on an incline next to a curb, turn wheels away from the curb.

• Lower headlights when driving in poor visibility (fog, heavy rain) or when approaching other vehicles.
• Activate headlights when visibility is poor, especially an hour before sunset.
• On the highway, do not accelerate the flow of traffic, instead, safely merge into exit lanes when leaving.

Preventing Driver Fatigue

• Avoid highway hypnosis by limiting driving to 8 hours a day and taking breaks every 2 hours or 100 miles.

Handling Skids and Off-Pavement Situations

• If your vehicle skids, ease off the gas and steer in the desired direction.
• If you drive off the pavement, maintain a firm grip on the wheel and reduce speed by taking your foot off the gas.

• Driving downhill requires you to use a lower gear to help slow down the vehicle.
