- The abdominal wall is a chamber enclosed by the abdominal wall containing a single large peritoneal cavity.
- Superiorly: The inferior thoracic aperture is closed by the diaphragm.
- Inferiorly: The abdominal wall is continuous with the pelvic wall at the pelvic inlet.
- The inferior thoracic wall is made up of the xiphoid process, costal margin, rib XII, and the end of rib XI.
- The pelvic inlet is made up of the superior expanded parts of the pelvic bones.
- Muscles: There are three main muscles that make up the anterior abdominal wall: external oblique, internal oblique, and transversus abdominis.
- There is no deep fascia in the anterior abdominal wall, which allows for free movement and distension of the viscera.
- Skin: The skin is hairy and loosely attached to the underlying structures except at the umbilicus.
- Umbilicus: The umbilicus is a scar marking the site of attachment of the umbilical cord.
- The umbilicus is located on the linea alba.
