Study Notes

  • Biology with Mrs. Darlington explains the 7 characteristics of living organisms
  • These are: growth, nutrition, respiration, irritability, movement, excretion and reproduction

Movement

  • All organisms move to some degree.
  • Movement occurs in response to stimuli, changing position by moving a part of their body, or their entire body.
  • Animals move to find food or avoid being eaten.
  • Plants move to be nearer sunlight, catch food, and release seeds.

Reproduction

  • All organisms must reproduce to survive.
  • Two types of reproduction exist: sexual and asexual.
  • In asexual reproduction, organisms reproduce through a form of growth, dividing into two or growing to produce a body part that breaks away to form a new individual.
  • Sexual reproduction involves the production of sex cells that fuse together at fertilization.

Sensitivity

  • Sensitivity is a.k.a. irritability.
  • Any change in our surroundings is a stimulus.
  • Stimuli are detected by the body and lead to a change in behavior.
  • Response is how we react to a stimulus.

Growth

  • Growth is a permanent increase in the size of an organism.
  • It is defined as an increase in dry mass after the removal of all the water.
  • Growth is also due to an increase in the number of cells.
  • Composed of many cells, organisms grow from a single cell, which absorbs food, increases in size, and divides into two cells

Respiration

  • Occurs in the cells of all living organisms to produce energy.
  • Digestion and molecules from food absorb after a meal.
  • These travel to your cells and are broken down in chemical reactions to release energy.
  • Two types of respiration are aerobic (with oxygen) and anaerobic (without oxygen).

Excretion

  • Removal of the waste products of metabolism.
  • Metabolism is the whole sum of reactions throughout the body within each cell that provides the body with energy, which includes the removal of substances that are surplus to requirements.

Nutrition

  • Process of obtaining food for energy.
  • Animals get energy from food, whether it be plants or other animals.
  • The food consumed allows them to make new cells for growth.
  • Plants get energy by absorbing light for photosynthesis, used to convert CO2 and H2O into sugars.

Vocabulary

  • Respiration is the chemical breakdown of nutrients inside cells to release energy.
  • Aerobic respiration occurs when oxygen is present in cells.
  • Anaerobic respiration occurs when oxygen is not present in cells.
  • Stimulus is a change in the environment.
  • Asexual reproduction forms new individuals from one parent without the fusion of gametes.
  • Sexual reproduction forms new individuals by the fusion of gametes (sperm and eggs).
  • Metabolism is all the chemical reactions that occur in an organism.
