Study Notes
60 Hz Distribution ESWS Function
- The system reliably distributes 450 Volts AC, 60 Hz power to all ship locations.
- Power is sourced from three SSGTGs or shore power cables.
- The system includes 12 shore power receptacles.
Load Shedding
- A protective feature against overload conditions.
- Non-vital loads are tripped first, followed by vital loads if the overload persists.
- Two stages of load shedding:
- Stage 1: 100% rated load for 100 milliseconds.
- Stage 2: 100% rated load for an additional 5 seconds after stage 1.
Breakers Tripped for Stage One Load Shed
- Ventilation equipment
- Preheaters
- Galley equipment
- General work shop
- Laundry
- Non-vital engineering equipment
Breakers Tripped for Stage Two Load Shed
- Air conditioning units
- VLS Anti-icing heaters
- SPY-1D Anti-icing heaters
Ships Service Gas Turbine Generators (GTGs)
- Three GTGs, Rolls Royce 9140RF Generator sets.
- Each rated at 3,000 kW, 4,800 amps, 3 phase, 450 volts, and 60Hz.
- Generator locations:
- GTG 1: AUX 1
- GTG 2: MER 2
- GTG 3: NR 3 GTG Room
Switchboards
- Three ship service switchboards (1S, 2S, and 3S) for zonal distribution of 60Hz, 450Vac, 3-phase power.
- Each switchboard is divided into three sections: SG, SA, SB.
- Additional 2SP section on switchboard 2S for shore power.
- Integrated with load centers (LCs) at specific locations.
- Specific switchboard sections house only their associated cross-tie breakers (XTBs).
- Locations:
- 1SA: 4-126-0-E (Aux 1)
- 2SA: 4-254-0-E (Mer 2)
- 3SA: 3-370-0-E (3 GTG Room)
- 1SB: 1-158-4-Q (NR 1 SWBD Room)
- 2SB: 1-254-2-Q (NR 2 SWBD Room)
- 3SB: 01-338-2-Q (NR 3 SWBD Room)
Shore Power
- Supplied via 12, 400-amp receptacles located on 01 level amidships.
- 10 receptacles typically used, for 4000 amps.
- Breakers are located in the 2SP switchboard in MER 2.
Load Centers
- Extensions of switchboards for zonal distribution.
- Connected to one power source (SWBD).
- Odd-numbered units on starboard, even-numbered on port.
- Six power distribution zones on USS RALPH JOHNSON.
Casualty Power
- Temporary 60 Hz power to vital equipment.
- Strategically located cables for power to span damaged areas.
