- 5S is a procedure that organizes individual workstations or departments and enhances efficiency at the micro-level by keeping the workplace neat, orderly, and accessible.
The 5S Process
- Sort (Seiri): Remove unnecessary items from the workspace, and only keep necessary items for continued use.
- Set in Order (Seiton): Assign a place for everything, and keep things in order to support systematic workflow.
- Shine (Seiso): Clean and maintain the workplace to prevent waste and accidents.
- Standardize (Seiketsu): Establish standards for cleaning, controlling, and improving processes to ensure consistency and control.
- Sustain (Shitsuke): Make 5S a part of the culture and the responsibility of everyone in the organization.
Sort (Seiri)
- Remove all items that do not belong in the working area.
