The Maldives are planning to attract tourists by offering them a COVID-19 vaccine as part of their strategy to boost tourism.
The strategy is called "Visit, vaccinate and vacation" (3V).
The tourism minister, Abdulla Mausoom, did not reveal when the vaccine offer for tourists will start or who will pay for it.
The plan is to ensure that all locals receive their first and second vaccine doses before tourists are offered the vaccine.
Currently, tourists must present a negative PCR test upon entry.
Tourists with a complete COVID-19 vaccination, which is at least two weeks old, can enter the Maldives without this restriction.
About 53% of the island's population has received their first vaccine dose, and 90% of tourism sector employees are vaccinated.
