Jose Rizal was born on June 19, 1861 in Calamba, Laguna.
His mother almost died during childbirth due to Rizal's large head.
She vowed to take Jose to the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Antipolo as a pilgrimage.
Rizal was baptized at 3 years old by Father Rufino Collantes in the Catholic church of Calamba.
His mother chose the name "Jose" in honor of Saint Joseph.

In a letter to Blumentritt, Rizal recognized Paciano as the "most noble of Filipinos."

Rizal was a product of a mixture of East Asian and European races: Negrito, Indonesian, Malay, Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish.
His great-great-grandfather was Domingo Lameo, a Chinese merchant.
The surname "Mercado" means "merchant."
Francisco and Teodora were married on June 28, 1848.
Teodora's family was said to be descended from Lakan Dula, the last native king of Tondo.
Her great-grandfather was Eugenio Ursua, a Japanese man.

The original surname of the Rizal family was Mercado.
The surname Rizal was given by a Spanish alcalde mayor of Laguna.
It replaced Mercado due to many unrelated people in the Philippines sharing the surname.
Rizal in Spanish means "a field where wheat, cut while still green, sprouts again."

The Rizal family lived in Calamba.
They belonged to the principalia, the town aristocracy during Spanish rule.
They were able to live well through honest work, frugal living, and owning a carriage and private library.
They sent their children to colleges in Manila, qualifying them as ilustrados.

Calamba was a hacienda town, owned by the Dominican Order, who also controlled the surrounding land.
Mount Makiling, a legendary mountain, looms south of Calamba.
Laguna de Bay, a lake of songs and emerald waters, surrounds Calamba.
