To cause difficulty, discomfort, or injury to cause dislike, anger, or vexation thoughtless words that offend needlessly to cause (a person or group) to feel hurt, angry, or upset by something said or done
“Did the manager just use a racial slur?”
“Are you trying to imply that I am incompetent?”
“Why did you assume I didn’t have a father growing-up?”
“What difference does it make to you if my children have different fathers?”
Being offended can definitely cause anger but it is not in and of itself an angry emotion. Offense stems from the value of someone or something one holds in high regard or sacredness being treated in a manner that is negative, degrading, or lacking respect.
When David killed the giant, Goliath, he was moved not out of anger but out of offense. He was highly offended by the lack of respect that Goliath had for God. The offense caused him to have the confidence to face the offending party and be victorious.
Offense can cause anger, but it is not anger. Offense is rooted in the lack of honor and reverence over something that should be honored, reverenced, or respected.
“I’m not angry. I’m offended.”
How to Manage an Offense
• Breathe.
• Recognize what you are feeling—offended, not anger.
• Do not be an easy switch to flip. Do not react.
• Ask yourself; should I address this offense? Is it the right time, place, or method to address it?
• If so, breathe again. Compose yourself. Let intellect lead your passion and not the other way around.
• If not, pray for the offensive person and keep being excellent.
