Personnel Security
- The Personnel Security Program (PSP) aims to determine and authorize access to classified information based on loyalty, reliability, and trustworthiness.
- Ensures proper procedural compliance before making unfavorable personnel security determinations.
Classification Categories
- Top Secret: Orange classification; disclosure could cause exceptionally grave damage to national security.
- Secret: Red classification; disclosure could cause serious damage to national security.
- Confidential: Blue classification; disclosure could cause damage to national security.
- Unclassified: Green classification; information widely available to the public.
Need to Know Principle
- Access to classified information is based on the necessity to perform specific tasks, not on an individual's position or rank.
- Authorized holders decide if another person needs access to classified material.
Investigation Types and Updates
- Top Secret: Requires a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) every 5 years.
- Secret and Confidential: Requires a National Agency Check with Local Agency and Credit Checks (NACLC) every 10 and 15 years, respectively.
- SCI: Involves a pre-nomination interview.
Security Access Eligibility Report (SAER)
