10 Herbal Medicines Approved by the DOH
- Legal basis: Republic Act No. 8423 (Phil Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care - PITAHC)
Lagundi (Vitex negundo)
- Uses: Cough, asthma, fever
- Preparation: Decoction (boil raw fruits or leaves in 2 glasses of water for 15 minutes)
Sambong (Blumea balsamifera)
- Uses: Anti-edema, diuretic, anti-urolithiasis
- Preparation: Boil chopped leaves in a glass of water for 15 minutes until one glassful remains. Divide decoction into 3 parts, drink one part 3 times a day.
Yerba Buena (Mentha cordifolia)
- Uses: Muscle pain, arthritis, rheumatism, cough, headache
- Preparation: Crush fresh leaves, squeeze sap, massage to painful areas with eucalyptus
Tsaang Gubat (Carmona retusa)
- Uses: Diarrhea, stomach ache
- Preparation:
- Diarrhea: Boil chopped leaves in 2 glasses of water for 15 minutes, divide decoction into 4 parts, drink one part every 3 hours.
- Stomach ache: Boil chopped leaves in 1 glass of water for 15 minutes, cool and strain.
Niyug-Niyogan (Quisqualis indica L.)
- Uses: Anti-helmintic (treats worms)
- Preparation: Take seeds 2 hours after supper. If no worms are expelled, repeat after a week. Caution: Not for children under 4 years old.
Bayabas/Guava (Psidium guajava L.)
- Uses: Washing wounds (twice daily), diarrhea (3-4 times daily), gargle/toothache
- Preparation: Warm decoction for gargle, freshly pounded leaves for toothache. Boil chopped leaves for 15 minutes at low heat, do not cover, cool and strain.
Akapulko (Cassia alata L.)
- Uses: Scabies, anti-fungal (athlete's foot, tinea flava, ringworm)
- Preparation: Pound fresh, matured leaves. Apply soap to affected area 1-2 times a day.
Ulasimang Bato (Peperonia pellucida)
- Uses: Lowers uric acid, treats gout and rheumatism.
- Preparation: Boil 1 1/2 cups of leaves in 2 glasses of water over low heat. Do not cover. Divide into 3 parts and drink one part 3 times a day.
Bawang/Garlic (Allium sativum)
- Uses: Hypertension, toothache
- Preparation: Fry, roast, soak in vinegar (30 minutes), blanch in boiled water (15minutes). Take 2 pieces 3 times a day after meals. For toothache, pound a small piece and apply to the affected area.
Ampalaya (Momordica charantia)
- Uses: Mild non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.
- Preparation: Chop leaves, boil in a glass of water for 15 minutes. Do not cover, cool, and strain. Take 1/3 cup 3 times daily after meals.
