Factoring Quadratics
- A quadratic equation is a polynomial in the form ax² + bx + c, where a, b, and c are constants (coefficients).
- The highest power of x is x².
- A quadratic equation can be written as a product of two factors (factored form).
- Factoring helps find the x-intercepts of a parabola (graph of a quadratic equation).
The Simple Case (a = 1)
- For a = 1, find two numbers that multiply to c (constant term) and add up to b (coefficient of x).
- If c is positive, the signs of the factors are the same as the sign of b.
- If c is negative, the signs of the factors are opposite, and the larger factor has the same sign as b.
- Example: Factor x² + 5x + 6. Factors of 6 (c) that add up to 5 (b) are 2 and 3. The factored form is (x + 2)(x + 3)
The Not As Simple Case (a ≠ 1)
- Use the box method to factor quadratics (including simple cases).
- Ensure the quadratic is in its simplest form.
- Example: Factor 4x² + 4x - 15 1. Divide the box into four squares. 2. Put the ax² term (4x²) in the top left corner. 3. Put the c term (-15) in the bottom right corner. 4. Multiply ax² and c to find factors (4x² * -15 = -60x²). Then find the pairs of factors that add up to the bx term (+4x) 5. Put the factors (-6x, +10x) in the appropriate squares. 6. Factor out common terms. 7. Read factors from the sides of the box. The factored form is (2x - 3)(2x + 5)
