Wonder Name……………………… Part #1 #1 Ordinary Why I Didn’t Go to School (3) 1.August’s one wish is to have a normal face. He wants a normal looking face, so that others won’t stare at him so much. (4) 6.August did have a few friends; Christopher, Zachary, and Alex. Christopher moved far away, and others are too busy for him now. 2.August got used to pretending he doesn’t see other people staring at him. Via (his sister) doesn’t pretend… she gets annoyed by them. 5. His mom used to homeschool August. She is an illustrator for children’s books. 3.August says that he is the ONLY ONE who realizes how ordinary he is. 4.August is very scared about starting 5th grade. Mom wants him to go and learn more things. 2.When August was born, he was taken out of the room – his dad rushed after them and dropped and broke his camera. 5.August clearly states that he does not want to go to school. He is not ready for that. 3.The cranky kid doctor fainted! The farting nurse kept kicking him and yelling, “What kind of a doctor are you!” She kept on farting all the time. 4.Last spring, while at Christopher’s house, August overheard his Mom talking about school. August will get a tour around the school. 2.August learns that Mom and Dad already met the principal, Mr. Tushman. August even took the admissions test and got a great score. 5.August meets Mr. Tushman. He notices that the principal looks like a normal guy and treats August normally. He likes Mr. Tushman. 3.Mom tries to convince August that going to school will make him ready for life and will make him smarter. 4.August’s Dad is being silly and jokes about Mr. Tushman’s name and an old teacher called Mrs. Butt. There, August notices many cool things and a funny portrait of Mr. Tushman that looks like a pumpkin. 5. August explains that the reason he let his hair grow long was because he likes when his hair covers his face, and can “block out the things I don’t want to see”. 3.The moment August heard kids talking, he became very nervous and scared. He did not want to meet anyone. 4.August explains that he doesn’t like meeting new big kids because big kids can be mean. Later, August corrects Julian’s word and then Julian ‘cuts’ in front of August and almost makes him fall. 2.Charlotte stands up for August. She patiently explains to him what’s a homeroom. He was fake kind. 6.August explains that Julian was not nice to him. They conclude that Julian is just nice in front of grownups. August still wants to go to school. 5.When August and Mom get home, August goes straight to his room. Daisy, their dog, came to lie with August on his bed. Henry drags his backpack, and then plops it on the desk between him and August. 3.On the way to school, August feels like he’s in a different world – not recognizing his neighborhood. 4.All kids enter the classroom. August chooses the seat in the back, so kids wouldn’t stare at him. Nobody wanted to sit by August. We learn that the braid is like the Padawan from Star Wars. 2.Julian went first. He said he got a new WII game and a new PingPong table. 3.Charlotte went next and said she has 2 sisters and a new puppy named Suki. 4.August went next.
